Blessing of the Animals
October 4th is recognized as the day of the church calendar to acknowledge the life and contributions of Francis of Assisi who lived over 800 years ago. Francis was born into a wealthy family and enjoyed a comfortable life, but decided to dedicate his life to God, to service to the poor, and to the celebration and care of Creation. Each year around Oct. 4th we gather to honor and celebrate all creatures of God's creation and the special relationships we share with them through the Blessing of the Animal's service. All animals are welcome for this special service! If you would like more information please contact Rev. Amanda Knouse.
Lenten Program
Each Lent we begin with the Eucharist and the Imposition of Ashes in St. James' Church at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Ash Wednesday. The next five Wednesdays in Lent we usually begin each evening with a half hour of refreshments in the parish hall at 6 p.m. followed be a simple bread and soup supper at 6:30 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. we have a program based on a theme appropriate for the Season of Lent and we conclude with a short service of Compline. Each year we have a different theme and there is always a free-will offering each night designated for a particular outreach program. On Thursday in Holy Week (Maundy Thursday) we have only a dinner and the Eucharist. Sometimes the dinner is a Seder Meal and sometimes we have the Washing of Feet at the Eucharist to emphasize the actual experience of Jesus with his disciples. As we approach Lent more information will be forthcoming.
Ministries Fair
The Ministries Fair is an annual event held in mid-September where each St. James' program and organization has a display that offers information and handouts (and a sign-up sheet for new volunteers!) about their purpose, activities, and goals. It is an excellent opportunity to share and learn information about the diverse activities, events, and groups working in our Parish. For additional information, please contact Linda Rines - linda.rines@comcast.net.
Shrove Tuesday Supper
There is nothing better for mortals than to eat and drink and find enjoyment, for these are from the hand of God.- (Ecclesiastes 2:24)
Shrove Tuesday began long ago with early Christians. It is part of the celebration of Lent, where people give up something for 40 days to empathize with Jesus Christ when he was sent in to the desert for 40 days and was tempted by the devil. As people were preparing to fast, they would use up all the household items such as milk, eggs and flour which easily were made into pancakes. Shrove Tuesday has become the last day for celebration and feasting. The name "Shrove Tuesday" is derived from the word "shrive", which means to confess and receive absolution. The name denotes a period of cleansing, wherein a person brings their lusts and appetites under subjection through abstention and self-sacrifice.
Shrove Tuesday's Pancake Supper is hosted by the youth of St. James' Parish. All proceeds are used to fund the youth programs.
