St. James' Church

Building was begun on St. James' Church in 1763 and was finished in 1765. It replaced a church which was built of wood in 1695. Prior to 1695 there was a church but at this time no one knows where or when it was built. The present church has undergone some changes since it was built in 1763. Originally all of the windows were clear. The south door was used as the front door when it was first built and the pulpit would have been located on the north wall directly opposite the front entrance. Oak Tablets, containing the 10 Commandments, the Lord's Prayer, and the Apostles' Creed were taken from the 1695 church and placed on the walls of the present church.

St. Mark's Chapel

St. Mark's Chapel, which was built in 1924, replaced St. James' Chapel, which was built in 1876 on the same property. Originally our parish built a chapel in Friendship in 1850 and named it St. Mark's Chapel. In 1915 it was sold for $500 and the monies were used to build the present structure in Traceys' Landing, directly in front of Herrington Harbour North and right next to St. James' Chapel, which was the torn down. In the late 1960s the chapel was set on fire and major repairs were made in order for the chapel to be used for services. The cemetery next to the chapel is a private burial ground for the Weems Family. However, our parish takes care of the maintenance of the cemetery in addition to the rest of our property.

Parish Hall

Our present Parish Hall was built in 1960 and included an auditorium, kitchen, two bathrooms, coat closet, one storage closet, one janitor's closet, one office for the Rector, one library, and six classrooms. As our parish has grown, we have converted four classrooms into additional offices for the following people: Parish Administrator, Parish Secretary, Assistant Rector, and Deacon. The two bathrooms will be redone in 2010 and made "ADA" compliant and the janitor's closet will be moved into the coat closet. The Parish Hall replaced the old Claggett Hall, which had been built in 1915. In 1997 we built an Education Building connected to the Parish Hall.

Churchyard

Our present Churchyard is basically sold out. We are planning to expand it to the south toward Route 258. We have numerous old tombstones including one for Ann Birckhead with the date 1665 clearly showing. Her husband's tombstone (Christopher) is totally illegible. We have an endowment fund, which assists us with the maintenance costs.
