Confirmation

Youth Confirmation

Confirmation is a sacrament (the others are: Baptism, Eucharist, Holy Matrimony, Reconciliation ("confession"), Ordination and Unction of the Sick). Sacraments are defined as "Outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive that grace." Typically, at age 16, youth in The Episcopal Church are accepted as adults through the Confirmation process whereby they make a public, adult affirmation of their faith. Youth who attend Church School will be preparing for this during the Journey to Adulthood program, although it is not necessary for a youth to attend Church School in order to be confirmed.

All youth wishing to be confirmed, however, must attend a series of discussions with Bill Ticknor+ and Amanda Knouse+ during the spring preceding Confirmation. The times for these meetings will be posted on the website and in The Shell.

Adult Confirmation and Reception

Please make an appointment with Bill+ or Amanda+ to determine your status in terms of confirmation or reception. Generally, if you are coming from a church in the Apostolic Succession (i.e., Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox), and have already been confirmed, you would be "received" by the bishop of your diocese, in a ceremony that normally takes place during annual confirmation. If you are coming from a different tradition, confirmation might be appropriate. This class will be much like an "inquirer's course" for people interested in reception or confirmation prior to the bishop's visitation. Note that confirmation or reception is NOT necessary before you can take communion, or participate in the life of the church.

Preparation for Confirmation/Reception should help the candidates discover the meaning of Christian commitment in their lives, and explore ways that their Christian commitment can be lived. This preparation may draw upon the baptismal covenant (BCP, pp. 416-417) and An Outline of the Faith (BCP, pp. 845-862).
